I grew up with Mike and his family, who lived cater-corner to our house on 22nd St. N., smack in the middle of the Lealman neighborhood. He and his brothers (Richard and John) and one of his cousins, Chuck, and my brother, Roger and I, along with several other boys in the 'hood, used to play sand lot football and baseball on the 1/4 acre lot next to my house.

Came home many an afternoon or Saturday dirty and exhausted, with bruises and cuts, loaded with stick-tights and sandspurs. Happy as can be though, with the memories of the roughshod games and my good friend Mike.

Mike always had a smile on his face, even when suffering the cramps of an arm or knee "frog" I would deliver at times with great glee. He would always get me back when I least expected it, leaving me to limp home, sore but laughing and plotting my next attack.

Mike was always the steady hand of our gang. Knew right from wrong, weak from strong, and, like me, always sided with the little guys that hung around us. I was sure, even then, that he would grow up to be a good man.

I lost track of him when I went off to fight the war in Vietnam. The last time I saw Mike was in a Blockbusters in the 49th St. shopping center. The moment I looked at him and he looked back, my childhood flashed before my eyes, and I was flinching, waiting for the next punch.

You will be missed, my friend. When next we meet, it will be your turn to deliver the knuckle.

I was really sad when I heard about Mike's death. He was always there when a smile or a kind word was needed. I had a number of classes with Mike and felt that he was a good friend not only to me but to everyone he met. Prayers go out to his family and friends.
